How to Replace a Door Lock in 20 Minutes
Updated: Oct 3
Door locks tend to jam and rust over time, especially when exposed to humidity and coastal salt air. The good news: swapping out the entire mechanism for a newer, more secure one is a straightforward drop-in project. Here's how.
What You'll Need
Wood chisel
Hammer

Step-by-Step Instructions
Remove the hardware. Unscrew the doorknobs and side faceplates using a Phillips screwdriver, pulling the pieces away from the door.
Take out the mechanism. On the edge of the door, unscrew the metal latch plate and pull the old lock box out.
Adjust the fit if necessary. Try inserting the new mechanism. If it's a tight squeeze, carefully use the wood chisel and hammer to shave small slivers of wood from the hole.
Secure the new lock box. Slide the new piece perfectly into place and screw the side metal plate in using the provided screws.
Install the doorknobs. Slide the center spindle through, position the new faceplates, attach the doorknobs, and tighten everything. Test the key before closing the door.
If the door frame strike plate is misaligned, you'll need to reposition it on the jamb. But for updating interior doors, this basic process renews your security and finish in 20 minutes.
