How to Replace an Outlet or Light Switch in 15 Minutes
Updated: Oct 3
A faulty outlet or a switch that glitches can be dangerous and frustrating. The good news: most replacements require only basic safety precautions and can be done in about 15 minutes with a few simple tools. Here's how.
What You'll Need
Replacement outlet or switch
Step-by-Step Instructions
Shut off the power. Go to the breaker box and turn off the main breaker or the one corresponding to the room.
Test for power. Use the voltage tester on the terminals to be absolutely sure there's no electricity flowing.
Remove the old outlet. Unscrew the wall plate and the base from the wall, pulling the assembly slightly outward.
Prepare the wires. Release them from the terminals. If the copper ends are oxidized, cut them with the pliers and use the wire stripper to expose about half an inch of fresh wire.
Connect the new outlet. Attach the wires to the terminals (the ground wire, usually green, goes in the center) and tighten the screws firmly.
Reinstall and test. Screw the new base into the wall, snap on the faceplate, and turn the power back on.
If your home's wiring is very old or you notice melted wires, it's worth calling an electrician. But for most routine replacements, this quick fix will solve the problem in 15 minutes.
